Clayton Long is Director of Bilingual Education for the San Juan School District in Blanding, Utah. A fluent speaker of the Navajo language and strong promoter of his native culture, Clayton coordinates various language and culture programs for the district including a student exchange with native people in Siberia.
In August and September 1999, Clayton brought a group of high school students fluent in Navajo to Haines Junction. The students attended school, including the Southern Tutchone classes taught by Martha Smith. During this time, Clayton came to the Yukon Native Language Centre to participate in the Native Language Teaching Certificate program. He has used some of the oral language teaching techniques back in Utah to teach Navajo to non-speakers. Since the first visit, Clayton has made several trips to Yukon communities with Navajo high school students and has been interviewed on Whitehorse CBC radio.
